Why Do I Need Legionella Testing?

If the water in your system is allowed to sit between 20˚C and 45˚C for too long, it can become a breeding ground for dangerous Legionella bacteria. In accordance with the Health and Safety Executive’s Approved Code of Practice (ACOP), section L8, it is your responsibility as an employer or building operator to prevent this from happening, to protect building occupants and employees from exposure to infected water vapour.

We offer Legionella risk assessments in Birmingham and across the West Midlands to help businesses stay compliant and safe. Our risk assessments are conducted in line with BS 8580-1:2019 by certified technicians using proven techniques. We can help you spot risks and offer straightforward Legionella control programmes, keeping you compliant with HSG274, the Health and Safety at Work Act and ACOP L8.

We’ll draw up comprehensive schematics of your whole water system

Photographic evidence collection:
Our findings will be backed up by photographic evidence

Finally, you’ll be issued with a highly detailed report covering all our findings and recommendations

As a trusted Legionella risk assessment company, our assessments are conducted in accordance with the latest guidance, including BS 8580-1:2019 and ACOP L8. Why is Legionella bad?

Legionella bacteria are known to cause an aggressive form of pneumonia called Legionnaires’ Disease, which can be fatal. The bacteria grow in water that is left to sit at a temperature of between 20˚C and 45˚C. It can then become airborne inside water vapour and inhaled by building occupants, putting them at risk of contracting Legionnaires’. Because of the hazard, Legionella control is a legal requirement under health and safety law. Building managers, landlords and employers are required to monitor for and prevent Legionella growth in their water systems, in accordance with ACOP L8, COSHH and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

What happens after the Legionella risk assessment?

After your Legionella risk assessment in the West Midlands, you’ll be issued with a detailed report, including recommendations for any remedial measures. We will also draft a bespoke Legionella control programme based on the specific risks found during your survey.
If remedial actions are deemed necessary, we can help with these too. However, BS 8580-1:2019 requires that the roles of assessor and contractor are kept separate to avoid a conflict of interest. We take this standard very seriously, so any remedial work will be quoted separately and you are in no way obliged to use EMS Water for remedial services.
